Spirit: 'Spirit of '76'

Back to SPIN

Originally a double album appearing on the Mercury record label in 1975, and now available for the first time as a double CD. This was the the first of four albums by Spirit for the Mercury label in the mid-'70s, all released between 1975 and 1977 The tracks on this album are perhaps the most fluid and satisfying statement by the Randy California/Ed Cassidy version of the band, who would be together for another 20 years before California's untimely passing There are many hidden meanings projected through this double LP set. Randy California gives more than a few nods to his work with Jimi Hendrix (covers of 'Like a Rolling Stone'and 'Hey Joe', while 'The Star Spangled Banner' has a smart vocal added to distinguish it from Hendrix's instrumental version).
