"There just aren't that many people who have that range of talent...the fact that he could not only play just about every style of Texas music, but play it with so much soul and intensity, was something that always amazed me." -- Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler
As the primary force behind the Sir Douglas Quintet in the late '60s and early '70s, San Antonio native Doug Sahm poured jazz, blues, R&B, conjunto, and psychedelic flavors into a unique regional style now known as Tex-Mex. While proud of his connection to the Alamo city, he was also a man of many worlds. As Sahm himself said it, "I'm part of Willie Nelson's world, and I love it, but at the same time I'm part of the Grateful Dead's world."

For his 1973 Atlantic debut, Doug Sahm And Band, the singer assembled a world-class studio group that essentially recorded the album live. Players included Dr. John, David "Fathead" Newman, David Bromberg, Flaco Jimenez, and Bob Dylan, whose "Wallflower" appeared exclusively on Sahm's record for almost two decades (both Dylan and Sahm sing on the track, as well as on "Blues Stay Away From Me").

Enjoying newfound critical attention, Sahm completed Texas Tornado (under the name The Sir Douglas Band) from sessions for the first album, along with additional recordings made in San Francisco. This Rhino Handmade release includes both albums in their entirety, as well as many alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks like "From A Jack To A King" and "Leave Me Alone With The Blues" -- both recorded in late 1972 with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel and Dave Grisman on mandolin.

A blues and R&B legend, Percy Mayfield is known both as a singer and as a songwriter for other artists, most notably Ray Charles. His singing career took off in the late '40s; when he pitched Jimmy Witherspoon some of his material, Spoon's Supreme Records signed Mayfield as an artist instead, releasing "Two Years Of Torture" b/w "You're Still A Square" (songs recorded years later by Brother Ray and B.B. King, respectively).

The hits began to flow, including his signature 1950 #1 smash for Specialty Records, "Please Send Me Someone To Love." But in 1952 Mayfield was disfigured in a car crash; he struggled through the rest of the decade, releasing unsuccessful singles for Chess, Cash, Imperial, and 7 Arts before leaving Los Angeles for his Louisiana home. During this time Mayfield wrote one of Ray Charles signature songs, "Hit The Road Jack," and the two reconnected.

Ray had broken big with "Sticks And Stones," "Georgia On My Mind," and "One Mint Julep," and his success brought him his own label, Tangerine. Mayfield found his way onto its roster, along with other Charles favorites like Jimmy Scott, Louis Jordan, and Lula Reed. He wrote custom material for his legendary label boss ("Hide Nor Hair," "The Danger Zone," "My Baby Don't Dig Me") and also recorded the songs on this release, considered some of his finest.

Among the gems on this collection are "River's Invitation" (1963), whose funked-up Gerald Wilson arrangement helped Mayfield back onto the R&B charts at #25. "Stranger In My Own Home Town" (1964) was subsequently recorded by both Elvis Presley and Mose Allison. The harrowing "My Bottle Is My Companion" (1968) chronicles the artist's bouts with alcoholism in the period following his accident. "Ha Ha In The Daytime" (1968) was his last Tangerine side, a remake of a previously unreleased 1962 number also included here.

You know his father Rex, star of such films as My Fair Lady and (the original) Doctor Dolittle. And you know his recording of "Windmills Of Your Mind" from the classic 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair; the sweeping Bergman/Bergman/LeGrand ballad won an Oscar® for Best Original Song and became a huge hit. But odds are you haven't had the chance to hear much more of Noel Harrison -- until now.

Harrison started playing professionally at age 20, taking gigs at restaurants, cabarets, and private parties. He spent the early '60s performing at bars and nightclubs all over Europe. He soon had a surprise hit for London Records with "A Young Girl," and a costarring role on the TV series The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. A new contract followed with Reprise, for whom Harrison cut three singer-songwriter-oriented albums in the late '60s. Folky soft rock on the surface, this material often leans into psych with its daring orchestrations.

The songs on this Rhino Handmade release are selected from those three Reprise albums: Collage (1967), Santa Monica Pier (1968), and The Great Electric Experiment Is Over (1969). Utilizing star producers and players from the peak-era L.A. scene, Harrison recorded original material and songs by some of his favorites: Donovan, Leonard Cohen, Arlo Guthrie, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins (some of Noel's versions were actually released first). Included are the previously unreleased "Mountains And Marianne," "The Last Thing On My Mind," and "Don't We All Get Lonely Sometimes." And with the original Thomas Crown soundtrack now out-of-print, "Windmills Of Your Mind" makes its only CD appearance here. This release also features liner notes written by Harrison himself.

Life Is A Dream is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies
