 Elton Dean's Ninesense -
'Live At The BBC' "British
saxophonist Elton Dean has long been the spearhead of
free jazz in England. He began his professional career with Long
John Baldry's Bluesology in 1967, then went on to help
form the Keith Tippett sextet before becoming a key
member of Soft Machine in 1969. In
the mid 70s he formed 'Ninesense', one of the most
influential cutting-edge jazz bands of the period. This
album is comprised of two sessions recorded by BBC Radio 3's
Jazz In Britain programme and contains the first recording
of the band, as well as almost the last. It has a total
running time of 55 minutes and the accompanying 8 page
booklet features a brief note from Elton Dean, plus
extensive liner notes by The Times' jazz critic, Alyn
Shipton" (taken from www.huxrecords.com).
£11.99 As befitting a great artist recording what will probably be his last album of new material the guest list on
Warren Zevon's new album 'The
Wind' is formidable: Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakam, The Eagles, Billy Bob Thornton, Ry
Cooder, Jim Keltner, Tommy Shaw, Randy Mitchell, Brad Davis, Jackson Browne, John Waite, Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, David Lindley, Luis Conte, Timothy B.
Schmit, T-Bone Burnett, son Jordan Zevon, James Raymond, Mike Campbell, Emmylou Harris, Gil Bernal, and Joe Walsh.

Do
you remember that 'New Album of the Week' feature that we
started that lasted one week? Well its back, in the form of
Montreal's Soft Canyon's
first album 'Broken Spirit, I Will Mend Your
Wings' - (from alien 8 recordings) "this incredible band that has risen from the ashes of Tricky Woo. The band borrows heavily from the Laurel Canyon sound that spawned the likes of producer, arranger and musician Jack Nietzsche as well as absurdist popster Van Dyke Parks, not to mention the great influence it had on Arthur Lee's Love and former Canadian Neil Young.
On Hope's Great Divide, a track that is incredibly catchy and chock full of studio trickery that will have you thinking it must be one of those lost gems from the 70's. The band also blends heavy influences of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother era, with early Grateful Dead and Allman
Brothers"....more
