An expanded re-issue of the 1994 collaboration of Richard Davies and Eric Matthews as Cardinal. 11 bonus tracks (b-sides, out takes and demos) give an amazing overview of a modern-day lost classic! In the early 90's, Richard Davies was a in a band called The Moles. One night at the Middle East club Richard met Bob Fay & after a few drum/guitar jams in his attic, Bob asked a classically trained young Oregonian named Eric Matthews to come along and meet Richard. Eric was a classically trained all-rounder but he'd been seduced by the underground rock scene and was looking for a new musical outlet. They experimented with a variety of pawn-shop instruments in Bob's dusty attic; Eric originally just played bass but was more interested in the new song arrangements, and Richard just got further ...out there. Late one night, after uncovering Bob's record of \"The Cardinal\" film soundtrack the group was now a band and the TOY BELL ep was quickly recorded in a local studio. Bob then got a call from Sebadoh to sub for awol Eric Gaffney and dissappeared on tour. Richard and Eric decanted to Oregon; the studios were cheaper and Eric could tap into a huge resource of local (willing) musicians. Among others, Tony Lash (Heatmiser - with Elliott Smith) and Thee Slayer Hippy were brought in to engineer and play on the new tracks and the album quickly took shape. The CARDINAL album was released in 1994. Musically it's hard to pin down. It's easy to hear Richard's love of early Bowie, Beatles and the Bee Gees coming through; easy to hear Eric's fascination with Jack Nitzsche and Brian Wilson productions, his love of The Left Banke and erm, Love. It's a record that's definitely more than the sum of its parts, a delicate 35 minute suite that's also robust and gives more with each subsequent listen. It's a head-fuck, though NOT because the volume comes blasting from left and right but because even after a few plays it leaves you wondering \"What the hell...?\". MOJO magazine featured the reissue as part of their BURIED TREASURE features in 2006. Wonderland Records released the album as a 21 track expanded edition on standard cd and a deluxe \"miniature lp\" gatefold cd edition (hand-numbered out of 500). (Wonderland/Cargo)
